Blessings are an amazing thing. They have the power to make your days brighter and your smiles bigger. They can also make you appreciate your life more than ever, totally thankful for everything that you have and are.
But what happens when you don’t feel as blessed as you like? More specifically, what if you don’t believe that you have an abundance of blessings, which leaves you wishing for a different life?
It is the “grass is greener on the other side of the fence” phenomenon and we’ve all experienced it at one time or another. However, there is a way to make your own grass greener, thicker, and more lush by drawing from the power of the blessings that currently exist in your life.
The Power of Blessings
The great thing about blessings is that the more attention you show them, the more they multiply in numbers. Like a tomato plant, you give it fertilizer and water and it gives you a large number of red, juicy vegetables, ripe for picking all season long.
Being blessed isn’t a situation or event that happens to someone that is lucky or otherwise receives something amazing. Although that is commonly how you hear it referred to, such as when someone says, “So many good things happen to her. She is really blessed.”
No, being blessed is a perception or feeling. It is being thankful for what you have and realizing that even if things aren’t as you wished, they could always be worse. What makes this distinction so important is that this means that you can be blessed regardless of the circumstances in your own life because it is internal and not external.
An Experiment to Consider
To illustrate this point, I’d like you to pick out the most negative person in your life and ask them what they would think if you told them that someone just hit their car that is parked out on the street. It is likely that they will respond along the lines of how angry they would be and how bad things always happen to them and about how they can never catch a break.
Ask the same question to someone who is positive and feels blessed and you’ll get a whole difference response. They’ll probably tell you that a car is replaceable and that they’re just glad they weren’t in it when the accident occurred. They may even reveal that they’ve been wanting to get rid of it anyway and this just gave them the opportunity to do it without feeling guilty.
See the difference?
How to Harness the Power of Your Blessings
If you want to have more blessings in your life, to be the person who can put a positive spin on any situation, then your first step is to learn to recognize when blessings exist. This one simple action has the ability to give you more blessings than you can count. And more blessings in the future.
Start right now by making a list of all of the things that you are thankful for. Include things such as a loving spouse, happy children, healthy parents, and an understanding boss. You can include the fact that you have a roof over your head, food in your belly, and a warm place to sleep at night.
You may even be thankful for a cat that has learned to not throw up on the carpet or a car that has managed to not fall apart despite all of the rust it contains. Everything is game when it comes to blessings.
Finding Your Blessings In Hard Times
Sometimes when you’re in a difficult spot in life, it is hard to see your blessings. Maybe you’ve received a bad medical diagnosis or someone in your family has lost their job and you don’t know how you’re going to make ends meet.
It can be harder to see the good in these things, but you can still find positives in these types of situations if you look closely enough. To help you with that, say to yourself, “It could always be worse” and then create a few ways that you could finish that sentence.
When you approach life from a vantage of blessings, your mind will learn to recognize them more easily, which puts them in front of you more often than you could ever imagine. In other words, your blessings will become more and your hardships will become less.
Harness the power of your blessings. They’re there. It’s time to recognize them so that they multiply.
