Buddies are Always Beneficial

In Live Your YOUlogy, I talk a lot about the buddy system and how it can help you grow and advance both personally and professionally. If you’ve not yet read Live Your YOUlogy, the buddy system basically involves finding someone you love and trust, someone who supports you and wants to see you succeed, and sharing your goals with them. This holds you accountable to that person, which ultimately means that you’re also going to be more accountable to yourself.

With the buddy system, you tell your buddy what steps you’re going to take to get closer to wherever it is you want to be. For instance, if your goal is to increase your sales by 10%, your steps may include increasing your social media marketing or offering more promotions to get more people buying your goods.

Or if your goal is to lose weight, your steps may include eating more veggies or working out daily. Sharing these with someone you respect and trust increases the likelihood that you’ll actually take these steps and follow through because you know someone who cares about you will be checking in and supporting your efforts.

Well, I was chatting with a friend a couple of weekends ago and he told me he had a list of potential clients sitting on a spreadsheet waiting for him to take action on them. I quickly chimed in about different things that I wanted to get done to grow my speaking business as well, such as reaching out to various organizations and seeing what I could do to help them excite, motivate, and empower themselves and their teams.

That’s when it hit me that, sadly, I wasn’t following my own advice about having a buddy to hold me accountable. I didn’t have that one person that I knew was going to ask, “Hey Red, you said you were going to do X, Y, and Z, so did you?” or “Red, you said you were going to do X, Y, and Z and you didn’t, so what’s going on?

It’s like the old saying about how the shoemaker’s son who has no shoes. Here I was telling the world about the advantages of having a buddy system, yet I wasn’t using this particular tool myself to the fullest, to help push me to do the things I’ve said I wanted to do.

Realistically, I’m a pretty self-motivated guy most of the time anyway, yet just knowing that someone will be checking in with me and making sure I am doing what I said I would be doing keeps me forging ahead. This is particularly important on days when I don’t feel like doing anything at all, or days when I have twenty other things on my to-do list and could easily put off my goals to handle them “some other day.”

Besides, after knowing this friend for 30+ years, I knew we’d be great buddies because we already had mutual love, respect, and trust. Plus, we both had goals that could benefit from a little bit of accountability to make sure we met them.

In the end, my friend and I decided that we would start the buddy system together and check in with each other every Friday to share what we did the previous week, or the actions we took to further our goals. We’d also tell each other the goals we have for the upcoming week, outlining the steps we intend to take to work towards where it is we want to be.

Even though we just started, I feel better already and am taking some positive actions in the right direction. So, I challenge you to do the same. Grab a buddy and get working on your goals together. This buddy may be a friend, a business colleague, or a family member (you’ll have to read my book Live Your YOUlogy to understand why I don’t recommend your spouse though).

Just pick someone that you trust, respect, and care for and you’ll be well on your way to reaching your goals. They’ll make sure of it!
