When You’re Stuck In the Muck

When someone asks you, “How are you doing?”, the question itself can sometimes feel paralyzing, sometimes you know and sometimes you don’t. For instance, when someone asked me that very question not too long ago, I noticed that at first it didn’t feel very good. Why? Because I am in the process of figuring out my next steps, the next thing or series of things I want to do in life, so it’s kind of like I’m stuck in the muck.
Now, if you’ve ever literally been in thick, glue-like muck, then you already know exactly how that feels. Not only does it keep you fixed right where you are and unable to move, but it doesn’t smell that pleasant either. It has that musty odor and, depending what’s in it, can sometimes smell like manure.
But here’s the thing about muck …when we put it in the ground, our crops grow bigger and better than ever before. It acts as a fertilizer, ultimately giving our food a better chance of surviving the elements and even thriving in them. It gives us bigger, more beautiful flowers that make our world brighter and more brilliant with color.
Remember this when you’re sitting or standing in muck, in a place that feels uncomfortable and unknown. While you may feel unsure how to move forward, sometimes this is exactly where you need to be in order to advance in the long run. Sometimes you have to simply sit still long enough to receive the “nutrients” you need to be become the absolute best version of yourself that you can be.
Admittedly, this isn’t always easy, but that is where having a little faith comes in handy. And by faith, I mean trust in yourself that you’re right where you’re meant to be at this moment in time. Faith, that after you receive whatever it is you need from your own personal muck, you will get to the place you want to be.
Of course, it’s also important to realize that muck is meant to be a temporary place. And you’re not actually stuck. Being in the muck is a conscious choice to sit with what’s uncomfortable. You’re not meant to stay there forever; just long enough to get whatever it is you need from the space in order to move on.
If you remind yourself of this every time you’re feeling trapped or confined, you won’t feel trapped or imprisoned while you’re there. The smell won’t be quite as offensive because you know that it’s a short-term proposition in the interest of your long term growth and prosperity. And when you keep moving forward, or “keep on swingin” as I say, the muck becomes the momentum that fuels you to higher levels than you’ve ever dreamt possible.
So if this is where you are right now, if you feel stuck, take a deep breath and let the smell and feel of the muck infiltrate your senses. Let it give you exactly what you need to become the person you want to be by allowing it to soak into your pores, providing your body the nourishment required to take you to the next level and the next and the next.
Relax in it for a moment knowing that it serves a valuable purpose versus trying to fight your way out, and then move on. In realizing that it’s actually there to propel you forward in the end, you’ll emerge with more energy, more strength, and more beauty than you’ve ever thought possible. Let it do what it does best…help you grow.
