Me and My Coach

In this day and age, it’s not uncommon for business professionals to hire coaches to help them take their careers (and their lives in general) to the next level. To have someone that helps you decipher what you want out of life and how to get it, you create this clearer picture of what your goals are as well as how to achieve them. It also gives you someone who holds you accountable for taking whatever steps are necessary to realizing your dreams, someone who pushes you to be your personal best so you can live the wonderful life you want to live.
It may come as no surprise then that I decided to hire my own coach to help me grow my speaking business. Before I did, I looked around, asked people I knew who’d they recommend, and ultimately decided on going with someone who has been around the speaking world a long time, like 25+ odd years. Just think of the things I could learn from such a person!
And learn I did. This coach has given me some valuable information that can help me grow my own speaking career, making all (or at least most) of my professional dreams come true, Yet, for some reason, I felt like I was still struggling to get in front of the right clients. My phone wasn’t ringing off the hook with people saying, “Red! We’ve just got to hire you to speak to our group! When can you come?”
What I eventually figured out was that I wasn’t using technology to its fullest extent to market my business and services. Realistically, this wasn’t something that ever came up during my coaching sessions, and I think it’s because this particular coach wasn’t big on technology. This coach was what I would call “old school” and didn’t even have a website.
Now I’m not knocking old school approaches because many of them still work today. However, in this case, if you don’t keep up with technology, if you aren’t on the internet, you often get left behind. Your potential client has a harder time finding you and if they can’t find you, they can’t hire you, no matter how good you are.
I decided to change this and now, if you Google “Motivational Speakers New York City,” I’m on the first or second page. (Test it out yourself and Google me!)  How did this happen? Because I blog every week. I use technology to help me get my name out. I meet people where they are today (online) so I’m easier to find when they need me.
My point is that, just because someone is successful with years of experience, that doesn’t mean that they know everything. We still need to figure some things out on our own, to decide what works for us, and build upon it.
Yes, we can learn a lot from our coaches, but it’s up to us to take what we’ve learned to push us to the next level. And sometimes this involves going beyond the information and experience our coaches and mentors can provide and doing things a different way. Different isn’t bad. Especially if it gets results.
