The Gift of Giving

If you’ve ever attended one of my speaking sessions or workshops, then you know that I often talk about living with passion and choosing a career that you’d do even if you didn’t get paid for it. Well, I’m a man who “walks the walk,” so to speak, so when it comes to pursuing my passion for speaking, there are sometimes that, in order to build my business, I have decided that it is in my best interest to do exactly that in order to reach my goals.
For example, a while back, I was contacted to do a talk for a group called FENG (which stands for Financial Executive Network Group). However, if I agreed, that meant giving the talk for free. Certainly, I love speaking and would do it without cost each and every time if I could, but the reality is that I have to pay the bills somehow, so that’s not always an option. Regardless, I did decide to do it, and I’m glad I did.
Not only was it a great experience with a wonderful group of people, but after it was over, they gave me some incredible references, all of which can help me grow my business. For instance, once that gig was over, they had me speak again to another chapter, putting me in front of even more people who can share with their co-workers, family, and friends what they learned and how my speech affected them, potentially inspiring some decision-makers somewhere to contact me to speak to their group to hopefully have the same effect.
Additionally, the chairman of group listed my blog in their weekly publication that goes out to some 50,000 members. Certainly, that gave me some great exposure too, making it easier to connect with other people who may be interested in me speaking for them.
So, while I wasn’t paid for that specific speaking event, that doesn’t mean that I didn’t get anything out of the experience. Besides, my whole point in speaking is to share my message with others, to encourage and inspire them to live a life that is filled with passion. Money is never the driving force.
And when we understand the bigger message, the bigger reason why we’re doing what we’re doing, small kindnesses (like speaking for free) often comes full circle. You essentially get what you give, ultimately meaning that doing for others has a way of doing for you too…even if that wasn’t your goal to begin with.
My suggestion to you is, if you’re working on growing your business, of getting your name out there in front of potential clientele, think of some things you can do, even if it means doing them for free.
If you’re a real estate agent, could you give a free talk about what to look for when buying or selling a home, putting you in front of the people who could potentially use your services? Or if you own your own landscape business, could you donate flower garden maintenance for the baskets scattered around your small town? What a great way for others to see your work and make them want to hire you too!
Not only does it feel good to give, to do things without getting money in return, but giving often comes full circle. So put out into the world what you want to get back. You never know what will happen when you do.
